Ever since we started selling our flosser, there have been fewer questions about the product and more about the efficiency of an oral irrigator. Countless times we have received questions inquiring if an oral irrigator actually works. And the answer is, yes, it works like magic. A water flosser is designed to get into the difficult-to-reach areas of the mouth and remove the gunk stuck there. Another question that customers like to ask is if a water flosser works better than a regular dental floss. For many people, a water flosser is a more feasible choice than a dental floss. A dental floss has its own charms, but an oral irrigator is difficult to beat.

Does an Oral Irrigator Work?

Does an oral irrigator work

Before we jump right into the discussion of whether or not an oral irrigator works, first let’s see what it actually is. An oral irrigator, water flosser, or waterpik is a battery-operated device that shoots a tiny, but powerful stream of water in between the teeth to get rid of stuck food particles, plaque, and tartar. A water flosser dislodges the food particles stuck in between the teeth without causing any harm to the gum, teeth, and orthodontic appliances.

Coming to the question of the hour, does a water flosser work? As answered before, yes it does work. In fact, it is better for people who have had orthodontic work done and for those with conditions like Parkinson’s, carpal tunnel, and arthritis. People with joint and mobility issues find dental flossing to be a difficult and painful task.

A water flosser helps them immensely, as not much movement is required to use it. When it comes to those with orthodontic appliances, brushing, and dental flossing is a difficult task. However, a water flosser helps them by effectively cleaning their oral cavity without causing any harm to the teeth. A few oral irrigators like the BOLT water flosser come with an orthodontic tip that helps water get in between the brackets and wires to remove debris and plaque.

Does a Water Flosser Work Better than a Dental Floss?

Water flosser vs dental floss

A dental floss is a great tool for removing suck debris and plaque from between the teeth. However, as mentioned above, a dental floss is not feasible for some people and in certain ways, a water flosser does work better than a string floss. Even though string floss is inexpensive and portable, water flosser still takes the lead with its multiple functions and nozzles. Moreover, there are certain top-notch flossers like BOLT water flossers that are inexpensive, portable, and lightweight.

A water flosser also lasts longer than a string floss and ends up a lot less in the landfill. Most scientists have declared string dental floss as an environmental hazard as they are made up of non-recycled and non-biodegradable material and tends to end up quite frequently in landfills due to large-scale usage. A string floss is also hazardous for animals, especially cats and they love to play with string. The floss can get stuck in their throats which can be fatal if not removed. If ingested, a string floss can get caught in the intestines of the animal causing obstruction of blood flow, leading to tissue death.

A water flosser on the other hand is not an environmental hazard as it is more sustainable, and reusable as compared to a traditional floss. A water flosser can last for years and therefore does not create plastic water after every usage. Therefore, if you are one who wishes to reduce your environmental footprint, a switch to water flossing will do you good.

Another reason why a water flosser is superior to a string floss is because most of us cannot reach the far areas of our mouth with a string floss and traditional flossing can also result in bleeding gums and inflammation. A water flosser however shoots water to all the areas of the mouth, even the difficult-to-reach ones, and does not cause gum inflammation or bleeding. In fact, the pulsating water jet massages the gums and removes plaque from around the gumline to reduce inflammation.
